Tech Visit

Iziko Museum and Steenburg Wine Farm

Monday, 26 September 2022
Depart 09:00 | Return 17:15
Price: US$130 (includes transportation, entrance fees, lunch, and wine tasting)
Minimum-Maximum:  25-50

Begin with a visit to Iziko South African Museum, which houses more than 1.5 million specimens of scientific importance, ranging from 700-million-year-old fossils to fish caught last week. Enjoy a private tour, guided by the museum’s Curator of Cenozoic Paleontology, and a documentary screening; both will focus on the history and impact of climate change in the South African context.

This museum is part of the Iziko Museums of South Africa, an institution managing 11 national museums, plus libraries, archives, and the most advanced Digital Planetarium and Digital Dome on the African continent. “Iziko” is an isiXhosa word meaning “hearth,” traditionally and symbolically the social center of the home; a place associated with warmth, kinship, and ancestral spirits. Here food is prepared and shared, stories are told, and knowledge passed from one generation to the next. Similarly, the museums that make up Iziko are spaces for cultural interaction.

After the tour, travel by bus to Steenburg Wine Farm for lunch and wine tasting. Steenberg Wine Farm, in the Constantia Valley, is home to world class wines, five-star hospitality, and exceptional cuisine. This was the Cape’s first farm, established in 1682, and the original Manor House has been restored and declared a Provincial Heritage Site. While wine tasting, learn about Catharina Ras, who is one of the most daring and controversial figures ever to settle in the Cape.

NOTE: A temperature check is currently required to enter the museum as part of their COVID protocol (subject to change). It is suggested to carry your vaccination certificate or copy of a negative test result with you.

Please register early! This visit will be cancelled if it does not reach the minimum number of paid participants by 15 August 2022.
