The following technical visit will be held in Cape Town on 26 September 2022 in advance of the symposium. Add it to your registration during the symposium registration process. Separate registration fees apply, and pre-registration is required.

Begin with a visit to Iziko South African Museum, which houses more than 1.5 million specimens of scientific importance, ranging from 700-million-year-old fossils to fish caught last week. Enjoy a private tour, guided by the museum’s Curator of Cenozoic Paleontology, and a documentary screening; both will focus on the history and impact of climate change in the South African context.
This museum is part of the Iziko Museums of South Africa, an institution managing 11 national museums, plus libraries, archives, and the most advanced Digital Planetarium and Digital Dome on the African continent. “Iziko” is an isiXhosa word meaning “hearth,” traditionally and symbolically the social center of the home; a place associated with warmth, kinship, and ancestral spirits. Here food is prepared and shared, stories are told, and knowledge passed from one generation to the next. Similarly, the museums that make up Iziko are spaces for cultural interaction.
After the tour, travel by bus to Steenburg Wine Farm for lunch and wine tasting. Steenberg Wine Farm, in the Constantia Valley, is home to world class wines, five-star hospitality, and exceptional cuisine. This was the Cape’s first farm, established in 1682, and the original Manor House has been restored and declared a Provincial Heritage Site. While wine tasting, learn about Catharina Ras, who is one of the most daring and controversial figures ever to settle in the Cape.
NOTE: A temperature check is currently required to enter the museum as part of their COVID protocol (subject to change). It is suggested to carry your vaccination certificate or copy of a negative test result with you.
Please register early! This visit will be cancelled if it does not reach the minimum number of paid participants by 15 August 2022. If the visit does not meet the minimum number by 15 August, IAIA HQ will notify you and provide refund information. Visit registration after 15 August is possible but is subject to availability and receipt of payment up until the 7 September final registration deadline.
If you must cancel, please notify IAIA via email/written request no later than 7 September 2022. IAIA will then refund the visit fee minus a 25% processing fee. After 7 September, no refunds will be issued for cancellations or no-shows.
Guests of registered delegates are welcome to register for technical visits at the same rate.
This visit will depart from the symposium venue. Plan to check in for the visit a minimum of 15 minutes prior to the noted departure time.
Liability statement: IAIA, the organizing committee, and the venue will not be responsible for medical expenses, accidents, losses or other unexpected damage to property belonging to conference participants, either during or as a result of the conference and during all tours and events. Participants are strongly advised to arrange their own insurance for health and accident, lost luggage and trip cancellation.
Participants will be required to sign a liability release waiver upon check-in for the visits. The full text of the waiver is included below for reference.
