Pre-symposium Tour

THE STORY OF WATER IN LINCOLN – A HERITAGE WALK

Among magnificent architectural structures in uphill Lincoln resides the 104-year-old, 120-foot-tall Westgate Water Tower, designed by Victorian architect Sir Reginald Blomfield and completed in 1911. It was commissioned following the Lincoln city Typhoid epidemic of 1904-5 during which113 people died due to drinking polluted water that came from Hartsholme Lake and the River Witham. If consent can be gained, this evening walking tour will visit the Tower to see the steel-plated water tank within, which was designed by the same designers as the Titanic. After the visit to the Water Tower, the group will walk around the historic area of Bailgate, with Newport Arch (circa 1072) at the north and Castle Hill (circa 1068) to the south, both of Roman origin.

This walking tour is free to registered symposium delegates, but is limited to 20 participants. Pre-registration by 12 August is required. All tour participants are required to sign a liability waiver at the start of the walk. Please review the waiver at the bottom of this page.

Date: Wednesday, 31 August  ǀ  17:30 - 20:00

Price: This tour is free to registered delegates, but is limited to 20 participants.
