Getting There Q&A
Q: Kruger National Park is a large park. Where exactly will the symposium be held?
A: The symposium will be held at the Nombolo Mdhluli Conference Centre at the Skukuza Rest Camp within the Park. [Insert hotlink to map that shows Skukuza Rest Camp in relation to the rest of the park: http://www.krugerpark.co.za/Maps_of_Kruger_Park-travel/knp-camp-gates-map.html or something similar] Note Skukuza is on the southern half of the Park.
Q: Which airport should I fly into?
A: For international flights, plan to fly into Johannesburg (OR Tambo) and continue on to Skukuza (SZK). You may need to book the flight to Skukuza separately. (Note that Skukuza Airport has been closed, but it will re-open 1 July 2014, and bookings can be made prior to 1 July.)
- Go to www.flyairlink.com
- Where it says City of departure, click on drop down box and tick Johannesburg OR Tambo
- Where it says Destination city type in Skukuza and Skukuza will appear in the box.
Q: When do flights depart to Skukuza?
A: There are two flights daily from Johannesburg (OR Tambo) to Skukuza. Currently, those flights depart at 10:00 and 13:20, but this is subject to change. We recommend you plan to arrive early in Johannesburg in order to make the flight to Skukuza.
Q: I do not have any flights that arrive in the morning in Johannesburg in time for a connecting flight to Skukuza Airport. Can you recommend a place to stay overnight in Johannesburg so I can fly to Skukuza the next day?
A: City Lodge, OR Tambo Airport Hotel
Address: Above Multi-storey Parkade 2, Level 5, Johannesburg, South Africa
Q: How do I get from the Skukuza airport to our accommodation (at Skukuza) in Kruger National Park?
A: IAIA is arranging for a private shuttle to bring people from Skukuza Airport to the symposium housing at the Skukuza Rest Camp and also to return them to the airport. The drive is approximately 15 minutes. More information about the transportation and how to register will be available soon.
Q: I have arranged for my own accommodation in Kruger National Park, not using those provided in the symposium registration process. How do I get from Skukuza Airport to my accommodation?
A: You can take the shuttle mentioned above to the Skukuza Rest Camp. At the Skukuza Rest Camp Reception, you will need to hire a car to travel to your accommodation. You can book your car at www.avis.co.za.
Please note that the Paul Kruger gate for the Skukuza closes at 6:00pm daily. See information about late arrivals below.
Q: What time does the Park open and close?
A: In October, the Entrance Gates and Camp Gates open at 5:30am, and they close at 6:00pm.
Q: What if I cannot arrive before the gates close?
A: Late arrivals are only allowed in cases of emergency (proof and valid reason required) until 9:00pm for guests with pre-booked accommodation at certain camps within 10km distance from the relevant gate. An extra late arrival fee will be charged which is payable directly by you at the gate. No late arrivals are allowed at Pafuri, Phalaborwa or Phabeni Gates or any other gates for camps more than 10km away. The late arrival fee for Skukuza camp is R500.
Q: Are there any fees to enter the park?
A: There is a daily conservation fee which will be waived for all symposium delegates. The list of delegates will be at the Paul Kruger gate, and delegates will need to provide photo identification. If you are traveling with non-delegates, a daily conservation fee will be required for each person. See the chart below.
Q: I will be driving myself to the symposium. How do you suggest I arrive?
A: We strongly recommend arriving by the Paul Kruger gate. However, if you are staying at another camp, you may find this chart helpful to determine distances between various camps and gates: http://www.skukuzaairport.com/parks/kruger/get_there/KNP_distances_beween_camps.pdf
